The Chester County Commissioners joined members of the Phoenixville Area Social Concerns Committee, representatives from area churches, Phoenixville Borough Council, businesses, non-profits, schools and universities in a ceremonial walk across the newly-named Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge.

PHOENIXVILLE — The Chester County Commissioners undertook a “first” this week when they formally dedicated a county-owned bridge re-named to honor the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Bridge 185 in Phoenixville was officially given the new name following a request made by members of the Phoenixville Area Social Concerns Committee (SCC) and Phoenixville churches in October 2015. The SCC’s mission is to promote community and racial harmony throughout the greater Phoenixville area in the spirit of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through direct action and relevant causes.

The bridge dedication ceremony included a welcome and comments from County Commissioners Terence Farrell, Kathi Cozzone and Michelle Kichline, as well as Phoenixville Mayor Michael Speck, Phoenixville Borough Council President Jim Kovaleski, and Mark King Exley, Chairman of the SSC. Representatives from Phoenixville’s business, non-profit, faith-based, education and government communities attended the event, which culminated with the unveiling of the bridge plaque and a ceremonial walk across the newly-named bridge.

The bridge spans the French Creek and bisects the borough of Phoenixville on Main Street.
