Rep. Becky Corbin (R-155) Tuesday announced the Department of Community and Economic Development has approved a grant through the Industrial Sites Reuse Program (ISRP) to support Petra Community Housing in performing an environmental assessment in Phoenixville.
Petra Community Housing has received approval for a $46,125 Industrial Sites Reuse Program (ISRP) grant for a Phase II environmental assessment to assess contamination of a vacant brownfield site, located at 730 Wheatland St. in Phoenixville. The site was home to a former grinding wheel operation and steel discarding facility.
“As a legislative task force co-chair last year reviewing how state government can best empower nonprofit agencies to serve those in need, I am very pleased to see funding approved for this important project,” said Corbin. “This is an excellent example of how the public and private sectors can work together to help our state’s most vulnerable citizens realize their dream of living in safe and affordable housing.”
Once the area is assessed and cleaned, Petra Community Housing, a nonprofit that creates affordable housing for seniors, families, and individuals with disabilities, plans to construct 48 townhouse rentals. The townhouses will be rented to families, seniors and special needs individuals, as well as veterans struggling with homelessness.
Additionally, Petra intends to construct a new 36,000-square-foot multi-services building to enable various service providers to assist community members.
Administered by DCED, the Industrial Sites Reuse Program provides grants and low-interest loans for environmental assessments and remediation. The program fosters the cleanup of environmental contamination at industrial sites, thereby bringing blighted land into productive reuse.
