DOWNINGTOWN — It’s only taken three weeks, but already two teams seem to be making clear claim to being the top high school football team in Chester County, Coatesville, off to an impressive 3-0 start, and it’s neighbor and rival, Downingtown West, which pummeled Mifflin County, 42-7, Saturday night.
The Whippets (3-0) were led by four TDs, three on the ground, by Jake Barr and a pair of TD passes from quarterback Tyler McNulty, as they ran out to a 35-0 lead at the half and cruised home for the win.
Barr set the tone with a 25-yard scoring run in the opening quarter. McNulty hit a pair of long TD passes, 69 yards to Tom Mattioni and 60 yards to Barr — and basically West was in firm control of the game by midway through the second quarter. Barr scored twice more before the half on runs of five and eight yards, effectively putting the game away before the half, as the Whippets led 35-0.
