Inaugural event a way to keep students – and community – safe
DOWNINGTOWN – Students and parents planning Downingtown STEM Academy’s first-ever Post Prom Party are seeking tax-deductible donations to cover the cost of food, refreshments, entertainment, gifts and door prizes for the event.
2014 marks the first graduation from the STEM Academy, the school ranked number one in Pennsylvania, receiving the highest score of any school in the new School Performance Profile. This year’s senior class has set the bar high for education standards, and the Post Prom Party will follow the inaugural senior prom. Scheduled for the evening of May 31, the party will be held in the STEM Academy, a school news release said.
“According to the Department of Transportation, on a typical prom weekend, 5,202 American teenagers are injured, 48 teens are killed in vehicle crashes, and 40 percent of those deaths are alcohol-related,” said Gina Ferron, chairperson of the Post Prom Party committee. “Even if your teen is not under the influence, he or she may be sharing the road with others who potentially are.”
Ferron explained that the Post Prom Party is an all-night, supervised alternative to private after-prom celebrations. It is held at the school and designed to entertain the students through the morning hours with a selection of engaging activities and food. “Special giveaways are also an important part of this evening, and all seniors are welcome to attend, free of charge, regardless of whether or not they attend the school senior prom,” Ferron said.
Monetary donations, as well as “wish list” donations are welcome. For a full list and details of how to make a donation, contact Donna Schneider, Prize Committee Chair, at 610-873-2754.
The Downingtown STEM Academy opened in August 2011 following a community response to the national call for an education focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics areas.
