DOWNINGTOWN — A couple of key fourth-down stops, followed by quick scores, was enough to undo Downingtown West in the opening round of the PIAA District One AAAA playoffs, Friday night, losing to Spring Ford, 43-21.
The fifth-seeded Whippets (8-3) winners of the Ches Mont National Division title, paid the price when they opted to go for — and failed — fourth down plays in their own territory, giving the No. 12 Rams a short field. Spring-Ford (9-2) took advantage, quickly scoring on both opportunities.
Still, even with that, the game remained close until thelate in the third quarter, when with the Rams leading 23-21, they proceeded to score 20 unanswered points to seal the win.
For Downingtown West, quarterback Nick Pagel threw for 297 yards and rushed for a pair of scores.
