Bruce W. Laverty, Esq. has announced his candidacy for Magisterial District Judge for District Court 15-1-01, which covers three precincts in West Chester Borough and all of East Bradford and West Bradford Townships.
Laverty has been practicing law for 24 years, starting as sole practitioner, then partnering in various law firms, and now practicing as Laverty Law Offices in Downingtown, PA. His office is a multifaceted general practice law firm and includes criminal and civil litigation, real estate, landlord-tenant disputes, alternative dispute resolution, personal injury, estate planning, protection-from-abuse matters, business, municipal, and health law. He has also been the solicitor for Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities for 18 years.
He is licensed to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the U.S. Tax Court. He is a member of the Pennsylvania and Chester County Bar Associations. In addition to his juris doctorate in law, Laverty holds a degree in accounting and a Master’s degree in Public Administration.
Laverty has been a resident of Chester County and West Bradford Township for 48 and 31 years, respectively. His two children, Michael and Danielle both graduated from Downingtown High Schools before going on to college. His community involvement includes 14 years as West Bradford Township Supervisor, 14 years as Township liaison to the West Bradford Fire Company Board of Directors, and 7 years on the West Bradford Township Emergency Services Board.
He is Past-President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Chester County Bar Association and has been a board member of Manor Investment Funds, Inc. He was a committee member of Boy Scouts of America, Hopewell Troop 8, and has attended First Presbyterian Church in West Chester for years. He also taught accounting at West Chester University as an adjunct professor.
Although he will be cross-filing to run on both Republican and Democrat Party ballots, Laverty has been a volunteer with the Chester County Republican Party for 22 years, serving as West Bradford Committeeman, area treasurer, and vice chairman.
Magisterial District Courts conduct both criminal and civil cases, including preliminary hearings for felonies and misdemeanors, traffic citations, protection from abuse, landlord/tenant disputes, truancy, and civil cases up to $12,000.
“Over the past 25 years, I have appeared in every district magistrate court in Chester County, in addition to many courts in our surrounding counties,” says Laverty. “This experience has provided me the opportunity to observe many courts and how they operate. If elected to this position, I will incorporate the procedures that work well while eliminating inefficiencies. I look forward to serving with honor, respect, and integrity.”
