With Pope Francis safely out of town, stages are full of shows today and this week<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The live music scene in the Philadelphia area went into limbo last weekend when Pope Francis and his horde of faithful followers took over the city.<\/p>\n

It bounced back in a big way with a full schedule of live shows at venues all around the area on the weekend of October 3-5 and the opening of a major new venue — Fillmore Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

Even Sunday night, which is traditionally a slow night on the entertainment calendar, has a full slate of attractive shows including performances by David Berkeley, Defeater, Loudpvck and the Danielle Nicole Band.<\/p>\n

David Berkeley<\/p><\/div>\n

Berkeley, who will play on October 4 at the Tin Angel (20 South Second Street, Philadelphia, 215-928-0770, http:\/\/www.tinangel.com<\/a>), has just released a new album \u201cCardboard Boat\u201d\u00a0 along with a novella titled \u201cThe Free Brontosaurus,\u201d which Berkeley wrote to accompany \u201cCardboard Boat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI first did a book\/CD combination \u2018140 Goats and a Guitar\u2019 four years ago,\u201d said Berkeley, during a phone interview last week from his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. \u201c\u201dI was more of a memoir and a set-up for my album \u2018Some Kind of Cure.\u2019 I did talks and workshops as well as a tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cLater, I realized the real way to do this kind of project was as a fiction rather than a memoir. Part of what I was feeling with the memoir was that it was all about me and my world. I had just become a father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cColored Birds\u201d is told from the perspective of Suzie, the main character from \u201cFreezer Drawer,\u201d a story from the novella. It\u2019s a story about a single mom struggling to hold it all together, feeling nostalgia for the time when she was the child and her mother was taking care of her. Each song on \u201cCardboard Boat\u201d is sung from perspective of the main characters that appear in the 10 interwoven stories from the novella.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the stories weave together,\u201d said Berkeley, who has released six albums beginning with his debut album \u2018The Confluence\u2019 in 2002. \u201cThe characters meet in other songs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to write about characters that weren\u2019t as fortunate as others. I was living in Chicago for a while and met a lot of strange people. I wove together a world of vignettes about these people who weren\u2019t comfortable in their shoes. They were people who were just off enough that they\u2019re a little wacky — not quite normal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw this piece of art — a brontosaurus — on the lawn of one of my neighbors. This guy fell into that category. So did the girl I\u2019d see in the market who was always talking to herself. It started with guys like these.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m intrigues by the other side. The cool thing about this project is that I was able to give these characters a song. Getting a way to sing for them is a way to empathize with these characters. But, none of the songs are based on a single person. Usually, it\u2019s a combination of two or three.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe big difference between the songs and the stories is that with stories, I could keep writing forever. I can\u2019t do that with songs. With a song, you have to lock into a story line early on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started recording the album last April. I\u2019d been working on the book for over three years. The book wasn\u2019t entirely done when I started making the album. I\u2019ve been editing the book and rewriting the book as I go along.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the Tin Angel, Berkeley\u2019s fans will get a chance to hear some of both the book and the music.\u00a0\u201cFor my live show, I have musicians with me — usually just two or three,\u201d said Berkeley. \u201cAt the shows, I\u2019ll read from the first story and then play the songs that come out form that. But, I don\u2019t do the stories in the same order as they are in the book.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show the Tin Angel, which features Adrien Reju as the opener, will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. The club will also host Sharon Shannon with John Byrne on October 7.<\/p>\n

Defeater<\/p><\/div>\n

Defeater, which plays Union Transfer (1026 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, 215-232-2100, www.utphilly.com<\/a>) on October 4, is also a musical act that has a literary feel to its music. The hardcore band from Massachusetts, is touring in support of its new album \u201cAbandoned,\u201d which was just released on August 28 on Epitaph Records.<\/p>\n

The band doesn\u2019t write songs so much as it writes histories — specifically the history of a never-named New Jersey family whose already troubled lives disintegrate into torment.<\/p>\n

The story is rendered all the more tragic for the depth and detail of singer Derek Archambault\u2019s<\/strong> lyrics. \u201cAbandoned<\/em>\u201d<\/em>\u00a0was written and recorded in a welcome period of relief in Archambault\u2019s life, after he\u2019d finally received a life-changing surgery that repaired severe hip damage he suffered in an injury.<\/p>\n

For years, chronic pain had been constricting his life, interfering with Defeater\u2019s performances and tours. Archambault\u2019s surgery, he says, allowed him to redouble his connection with his own writing, leaving him clear to truly inhabit what he calls his own Glass family — after the famous J.D. Salinger characters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started writing it in October 2014,\u201d said Archambault, during a recent phone interview from a tour stop in Houston. \u201cWe tracked it from December to February. Every record is planned our before we start working on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI try to leave the meaning of the story up to people\u2019s imaginations. It transcends punk and hardcore. It is a relatable story for everyman. I want people to get what they can from the story.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first plan it out, it\u2019s a loose storyline. It\u2019s not hard for me to be in the minds of the characters. But, I\u2019m such a revisionist. I have it down one way and then change it up in the studio. I still write the music on punk loud guitars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Archambault is well on his way back from the hip injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m almost 100 per cent recovered,\u201d said Archambault. \u201cI didn\u2019t take any pain meds to deal with the pain from the injury. I was in a messed -up place. Chronic pain affected my whole personality. I was a miserable SOB for two years. I couldn\u2019t walk. I couldn\u2019t sit. It was living hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Archambault, the pain his characters feel comes from pain he\u2019s witnessed or experienced, and the unexplainable event that triggers the story of\u00a0\u201cAbandoned\u201d — <\/em>the action of a higher power or just chance. It deals with his main character\u2019s agonizing relationship with that higher power.<\/p>\n

Defeater, which features Jay Maas (guitar, backing vocals), Jake Woodruff\u00a0 (guitar),\u00a0 Mike Poulin (bass), Joe Longobardi (drums) and Archambault (lead vocals), is energized by its first album in two years and ready to hit the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels really good to be back with the band and to be able to deal with everything,\u201d said Archambault. \u201cWe have a three-week tour of America, three weeks at home and then we\u2019re off to Europe for another tour. \u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beauty Pill<\/p><\/div>\n

Another musician who has had to deal with serious health issues will be bringing his band to town this week. On October 7, Beauty Pill will headline a show at Boot and Saddle (1131 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, 215-639-4528, www.bootandsaddlephilly.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Beauty Pill is a Washington, DC-based, semi-electronic band led by producer, singer, songwriter, and guitarist Chad Clark. The band includes Basla Andolun, Jean Cook, Drew Doucette and Devin\u00a0Ocampo.<\/p>\n

After several critically-acclaimed\u00a0records, Beauty Pill amicably parted ways with Dischord Records in 2014. The band is back now with a new album on Buuterscotch Records — \u201cBeauty Pill Describes Things As They Are.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 excitement\u00a0 surrounding\u00a0 the\u00a0 return\u00a0 of\u00a0 Beauty\u00a0 Pill is not just because of\u00a0the densely-constructed and deeply-felt music found on the new album but also because Clark is healthy and able to continue creating music.<\/p>\n

In 2007, Clark was stricken with viral cardiomyopathy, a rare condition resulting from a virus invading and inflaming the heart. In 2008, he underwent two open heart surgeries that saved his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a heart condition that came from a virus,\u201d said Clark, during a phone interview last week from his home in D.C. \u201cSo, there are no super-long drives when we are on tour. We just set up short tours when we go out.<\/p>\n

\u201cA few years ago, a virus went to my heart. Usually, it is fatal because the heart has very few defenses against viruses. I had a couple surgeries that saved my life. I\u2019m grateful just to be alive. I still want to tour but I have to do it safely. The doctors told me to make sane decisions. I feel great — especially when we\u2019re playing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The band now is doing is mini-tours in support of the well-received \u201cBeauty Pill Describes Things As They Are\u201d album.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy health condition was definitely one of the themes of the album,\u201d said Clark. \u201cThe struggle — mortality looms over the record. It\u2019s fine that they see my reality. I don\u2019t think that it\u2019s a gloomy record. There is only one song that directly addresses my experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the things we know about mortality are already well documented in literature. Life is short. You need to try to live life understanding how short it is — and how precious it is. Death is threaded through the songs in a less direct way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beauty Pill is a vehicle for Clark\u2019s songs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do all the writing for the band,\u201d said Clark. \u201cMy band mates all have their own projects in addition to Beauty Pill but the line-up has stayed steady. I really value my band mates but, at its core, the band is my vision.<\/p>\n

The show at Boot and Saddle will start at 8:15 p.m. with Scott Churchman and Clique as the opening acts. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door.<\/p>\n

Martin Bisi<\/p><\/div>\n

On October 7, The Fire (412 West Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, 267-671-9298, thefirephilly.com) will present a show by Martin Bisi — a multi-talented musician who has a reputation as a top-flight performer, engineer, recording artist and record producer.<\/p>\n

There are some musicians who have made indelible marks in the history book of rock music even though they have remained primarily in the background — talented musicians who have also become masters of the recording studio as producers and engineers.<\/p>\n

Some of the world-acclaimed musicians who top the list in this category are Brian Eno (Roxy Music, David Byrne, U2, Robert Fripp) and Bill Laswell (Material, Herbie Hancock, Mick Jagger, Ornette Coleman). Bisi is right up there with them\u00a0 — and he has worked with both.<\/p>\n

In the recording studio, Bisi has worked with an amazing range of artists — from Iggy Pop, The Ramones and White Zombie to John Zorn, Herbie Hancock and Sonic Youth. He also produced the Dresden Dolls and has worked frequently with Dresden Dolls drummer Brian Viglione.<\/p>\n

Bisi is also a solo rock artist who performs live and occasionally releases an album. The New York-based musician released his first album \u201cCreole Mass\u201d in 1988 and followed with \u201cAll Will Be Won\u201d (1992),\u201d See Ya In Tiajuana\u201d EP (1994), \u201cDear Papi I\u2019m In Jail\u201d EP (1996), \u201cMilkyway Of Love (1999), \u201cSirens Of The Apocalypse\u201d (2008), \u201cSon Of A Gun\u201d EP (2010) and \u201cEx Nihilo\u201d (2014).<\/p>\n

Next up for Bisi is a new album called \u201cSolstice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Solstice\u2019 is coming along slower than I expected — but faster than a typical record for me,\u201d said Bisi, during a phone interview last week from his home in New York. \u201cThe EP \u2018Son of a Gun\u2019 was intended to be fast and collaborative. In \u2018Ex Nihilo,\u2019 there are songs that are pretty worked out and strung together.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy personal music has changed a lot over the years. From a practical standpoint, the older stuff is so off-target from what I\u2019m doing now. There was ethical and spiritual stuff on \u2018Creole Mass.\u2019 Then, there was garage stuff in the 90s and indie pop stuff after that. That music was concise. Now, my music is darker — almost like a soundtrack.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Ex Nihilo\u2019 was recorded over a period of time \u2014 from 2010-2013. The song \u2018Fine Line\u2019 was the genesis of that album. It was written with the Dresden Dolls\u2019 Brian Viglione in mind. The rest of the album is very different. I even have a professional opera singer — Amanda White — singing on the album.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor my next album, I fell into this concept that seems so obvious to me. It will feel like a follow-up to \u2018Ex Nihilo.\u2019 I\u2019m going to call it \u2018Solstice\u2019 and base each side on a solstice \u2014 a path of a year.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Solstice\u2019 is more like song ideas — taking good song ideas and not developing them into a structure. Structure can be formulaic and tedious. \u2018Solstice\u2019 is really a suite. Each side will be six or seven segments — waves that come in and out. It\u2019s definitely very ambient and like my live sets when I go between moody-and-eclectic and cathartic-and-aggressive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe album has ambient bits with layers and droning interspersed with weird, jarring sounds. It\u2019s calm but it could be unsettling at any moment. And, there is a lot of operatic singing. It\u2019s odd — but it works in there. It\u2019s dramatic in a way similar to opera.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be somewhat operatic with post-punk noise underneath \u2014 rhythm and voice and a lot of weird sounds. And, I want it on vinyl. Vinyl is round and looks like a planet — and it has two sides. One side will be winter and the other side will be summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy live show is still stuff mostly from \u2018Ex Nihilo.\u2019 I feel like I finally have a perfect set. It took me this long to completely nail it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Ardmore Music Hall (23 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, 610-649-8389,\u00a0www.ardmoremusic.com<\/a>) will host a \u201cJam for Sam Benefit\u201d on October 4 and present a twin bill featuring Naughty Professor and Out of the Beardspace on October 7.<\/p>\n
