Kate Klim<\/p><\/div>\n

Kate Klim, a talented singer\/songwriter and Chester County native, graduated from Downingtown High School in 2000.<\/p>\n

In the two decades since, she has lived all around the country, built a reputation as a top-flight performer and released three albums.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been five years since she released a new album but that could change in the not-too-distant future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a 10-track album that I\u2019ve been working on,\u201d said Klim, during a phone interview last week from her home in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe band tracks are done for all 10. I just have to do the vocals and live piano. I might go to a studio here in Nashville for a Baby Grand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Klim \u2013 and just about every other \u201cnon-working\u201d working musician \u2013 knows that the music industry slammed into a brick wall when the COVID-19 pandemic took over our lives.<\/p>\n

Unless you\u2019re a superstar or a music act with a mega-sized internet following, you don\u2019t even want to consider releasing an album.<\/p>\n

To put out an album and not be able to promote it \u2013 not be able to take it on the road \u2013 would be suicidal. Many, many acts have had to temporarily shelve recently recorded discs and wait until venues re-open.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been thinking 2021 as the time to release the album release so it\u2019s not too far behind schedule,\u201d said Klim. \u201cMy intentions have always been to play an album release tour early next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without a doubt, the tour will include one or two dates in this area. Klim always stays true to her Chester County roots.<\/p>\n

Born not far from Lake Michigan in the Chicago suburb of Palatine, Klim moved to the Brandywine Valley when she was a pre-teen and lived here until she headed north to study at the Berklee School of Music in Boston.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe moved to Lionville when I was 11 and now our family lives right in Downingtown,\u201d said Klim. \u2018For the longest time, I really wanted to be an actor. I was even a teen rep on the board of Barleysheaf Players. Every summer, I was in a show at Barleysheaf and I also was in a lot of musicals at school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Klim was five years old when her family inherited a piano, nine years old when she received her first lesson, and 11 years old when an unsuccessful audition for the film \u201cLife with Mikey\u201d caused her to rethink her planned career as a movie star.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was 15, I shifted to music,\u201d said Klim. \u201cI went on a leadership trip in high school — LINK (Leaders Involved in Networking Kids) at Camp Conrad Weiser. It was about finding out about other people. After that, I focused on music and started writing seriously.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played music a lot when I was in high school. My first performance of a song I wrote was for a choir concert at school. I also won a talent show at Downingtown High and I got to perform at graduation. I played an original song about leaving and going out on your own.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it came to choosing a college, it was Berklee or NYU. It all happened really fast. It was almost as if Berklee chose me. Before I knew it, I was a freshman there. Berklee is great because everybody plays music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Klim earned a degree in songwriting at Berklee and released a nine-song CD called \u201cHeaven Help Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her early influences were veteran singers such as Anne Heaton, Jonatha Brooke and Ani DiFranco.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had various influences,\u201d said Klim. \u201cBut I\u2019ve never tried to copy them. When I\u2019m writing, I just write what I feel like. The lyrics and the music generally come at the same time. When I\u2019m done, if it reminds me too much of someone else I\u2019ve listened to, I trash it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Klim left Boston after graduation but, unlike so many fresh Berklee grads, she did not immediately board a charter bus from Beantown to Music City. Instead, she returned to her home turf where she performed at many of the Delaware Valley\u2019s top venues \u2013 especially Burlap and Bean in Newtown Square.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve played a lot of different venues in the Philadelphia area over the years,\u201d said Klim, who split time in the late \u201cAughts\u201d between Downingtown and Washington D.C.<\/p>\n

Around the same time, Klim also worked as a music teacher for the Meridee Winters School of Music in Ardmore.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still work as a teacher there,\u201d said Klim. \u201cBack when I started, I taught piano lessons all over \u2013 in-home piano lessons as well as lessons at the school. Now, it\u2019s done completely differently.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis school has an emphasis on creativity. This is a great job for me. My degree is in songwriting, so I get to work in the profession I studied in school.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2006, Klim, who plays keyboards and sings, released a new album, \u201cUp and Down and Up Again,\u201d which was created with the help of renowned producer Crit Harmon (Martin Sexton, Susan Werner, Lori McKenna). In 2009, she moved to Nashville and then released her \u201cKamikaze Love\u201d album in 2011.<\/p>\n

Klim has been recognized by some of the country\u2019s premier songwriting contests. She won the 2010 Kerrville New Folk competition and was a finalist in the 2005 and 2006 Mountain Stage Newsong Contests, 2006 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, 2007 Kerrville Newfolk Competition, 2007 Solarfest Competition, and 2011 Telluride\u00a0Troubadour Competition. She was also selected as a 2012 Emerging Artist by\u00a0the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made \u2018Kamikaze Love\u2019 in Boston with a guitar player named Brian Packer,\u201d said Klim. \u201cI also recorded my most recent album \u2018100 Million Years\u2019 with Brian. We recorded it in 2014 at Kingsize Soundlabs in Los Angeles and it came out in August 2104.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did a Kickstarter campaign and it was great. We met our goal. The industry keeps changing and fans are replacing record companies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform in which fans are offered rewards in exchange for their pledges. A pledge goal is set and the artist must reach that goal or forfeit the pledges. Klim\u2019s goal was $10,000 and she received $11,127 from 128 backers.<\/p>\n

Klim also got married in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cI lived in Nashville from 2009-2014,\u201d said Klim. \u201cFrom 2014-2017, because of my husband\u2019s job, we moved around a lot \u2013 Louisville, Kentucky\u2026Philly\u2026Columbus, Ohio.<\/p>\n

Klim put her music career on hold for the last five years \u2013 not because of relocations but rather because she had two sons. Colin was born in July 2015 and Isaac in April 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cI pretty much put music on the back burner,\u201d said Klim. \u201cI had babies 20 months apart, so I was pregnant or having a baby for a long time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stopped writing in 2015. It was hard to get that time by myself. I missed making music the whole time. Before I had kids, music was my main interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn New Year\u2019s Eve 2019-2020, I made a New Year\u2019s resolution to start writing and making music again. I told myself \u2013 if it doesn\u2019t happen this year, you\u2019re going to lose it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to a songwriters\u2019 retreat — the Folk Alliance International Conference in Montreal. I hadn\u2019t written a song in a year. I finished one at the conference called \u2018Songbird.\u2019 Then, I went to Dallas to start recording. \u2018Songbird\u2019 is about returning to music. It\u2019s the first song on the new album.\u201d<\/p>\n

Klim\u2019s musical hiatus is over. Thankfully, the \u2018Songbird\u2019 has started to fly again.<\/p>\n
