In what previously were normal times, if the subject line in an e-mail said \u2013 \u201cNeed a lift? \u2013 you might think it was an e-mail from Uber or another ride-sharing service.<\/p>\n

This week, it was the subject line in an e-mail sent out by singer-songwriter Karen Gross and the lift offered was spiritual rather than transportation-oriented.<\/p>\n

Gross, who has built a reputation as a top-flight performer in Chester County and around the Delaware Valley, started the e-mail with this message \u2013<\/p>\n

\u201cHello friends,
\nThe past few days have brought wave after wave of\u00a0emotion.\u00a0We need a moment to pause and be still.\u00a0We need each other.\u00a0More than ever, we need a space for hope,\u00a0healing, and community.<\/p>\n

A few weeks ago, the first High Note brought people together from across the globe. It was a\u00a0balm for the\u00a0spirit.\u00a0I invite you to be part of our next convening.\u201d<\/p>\n

She followed with \u2013 \u201cYou and yours are invited to \u2018The High Note: An Uplifting Global Convening,\u2019 at 1 p.m. EST, Saturday, June 6, 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gross offered an explanation of the project \u2013<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is the High Note?<\/p>\n

– A free, 30-minute video call, with an\u00a0uplifting meditation, inspirational Q&A, and live music
\n– A gentle, safe, and reflective\u00a0space for all
\n– A time for hope,\u00a0healing, and\u00a0community
\n– A place to learn ways of staying centered and creative\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0uncertainty
\n– An invitation to envision and\u00a0imagine a more peaceful world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Francis\u00a0is a\u00a0certified From Grief to Gratitude™ coach, an\u00a0ordained interfaith minister, a poet, and an accomplished writer.<\/p>\n

As a newspaper entertainment writer, Francis has interviewed hundreds of artists and entertainers including James Earl Jones, Elizabeth Gilbert, Bobby McFerrin, k.d. lang, and Pink.<\/p>\n

In addition to covering arts and entertainment in the Philadelphia region, Francis has shared stories from her own life in her popular column — Life in LaLa Land. She has won Philadelphia, PA and NJ awards for her work, and her freelance writing has appeared online at Mystic Pop, vensuzine, Sharkpreneur and TheSpiritedWoman.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Francis, \u201cWriting is an intrinsic part of me. I can\u2019t really separate it from who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

Francis has been a featured presenter at the Philadelphia Writers\u2019 Conference alongside Jonathan Mayberry and Solomon Jones. She has been a panelist for the Philadelphia Songwriters Project, a guest emcee for Bloomingdale\u2019s events, and a guest tweeter with Opera Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

Francis, whose roots are in the Caribbean island nation St. Lucia, is also a \u201cCitizen of the World\u201d — a world traveler whose journeys have taken her to Tanzania as an orphanage volunteer, Mallorca to study poetry and Peru, where she climbed Machu Picchu Mountain with a shaman as her guide.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Blaine<\/p><\/div>\n

Blaine\u00a0is a\u00a0life coach who listens for and supports people\u2019s best selves. She is a certified coach from the Hendricks Institute and a member of the American Counseling Association.\u00a0She works with people around the world. As one client reports, \u201cJennifer provides a safe, supportive environment to explore my most audacious goals and dreams — and practical ideas to put my dreams into action right away.\u201d<\/p>\n

On her website, Blaine is billed as an actor, comedian, playwright, and character chameleon. She has been performing one-woman shows for 25 years. Her original writing, performing, and comedy delve into serious and socially relevant issues and provides audiences the opportunity to unite in laughter.<\/p>\n

Blaine has opened for George Carlin, performed with Chris Rock and Joe Piscopo, and has worked with Glenda Jackson, Christopher Plummer, Laura Linney, Joanne Woodward, and Paul Newman. She starred in the animated series \u201cTeddy P. Brains,\u201d in which she played a precocious brainy boy, and has lent her voice to hundreds of voiceover projects.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Blaine was the resident Theatre Teaching Artist at the Showstoppers program at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts from 2013-2018 in which she created four original plays on topical issues from bullying to civil rights. She produced the \u201c5,000 Women\u201d festival, showcasing women artists and social activists, at The Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University in 2011 and 2012 and in Philadelphia in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cJennifer is a talented solo performer, comedienne and a life coach,\u201d said Gross. \u201cI\u2019ve benefitted from her coaching \u2013 as a performer and as a person.\u201d<\/p>\n

This will be the second edition of \u201cThe High Note.\u201d The first \u2013 \u201cThe High Note: A Virtual Dose of Hope, Community and Positivity\u201d \u2013 took place in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the pandemic hit and we all went into lockdown, the \u2018High Note\u2019 on March 28 was a response to people being isolated,\u201d said Gross.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had an idea of creating an uplifting moment \u2013 30 minutes on ZOOM \u2013 a moment of hope where we can try to be optimistic. Jennifer and Blaine came to mind right away because they do so much good. Jennifer always has a positive thing to say through humor.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the March \u2018High Note,\u2019 Naila led a really beautiful meditation and gave a glorious blessing. Jennifer provided some inspirational guidance on ways to go with the pandemic. Then, I came and performed an original song called, \u2018Walk Alone.\u2019 I wrote it years ago, but it has some resonance now.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has performed at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center in New York City and the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

She has scripted, performed, and produced a number of popular cabaret shows, including a sold-out concert of Oscar Hammerstein\u2019s music at his longtime home, Highland Farm, and a Roaring Twenties-themed cabaret at the Studio of Ben Solowey.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love playing traditional clubs, but I also like performing in alternate spaces \u2013 like the show I did at the Studio of Ben Solowey,\u201d said Gross. \u201cHis studio is an arts installation that is like a mini-museum dedicated to his work. I performed in an intimate gallery space. I\u2019ve done three shows there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gross is like a modern-day Renaissance woman. She has recorded her original music with three Grammy Award-winning producers. Her voice and lyrics can also be heard on electronic dance music developed in collaboration with her brother, Silk Music label director\u00a0Jacob Henry<\/a>, and globally recognized producers Dinka, Mango, and Aeron Aether.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy music life has definitely been affected by the pandemic,\u201d said Gross. \u201cI did have shows that were scheduled become cancelled because of this. I also just finished recording some songs at Cambridge Studio in Philadelphia, but they won\u2019t be released for a while now.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn this Saturday\u2019s presentation, I\u2019ll be singing a new song –\u2018A Place Called Peace.\u201d Naila will be on first to give a blessing. Then, Jennifer will be coaching and chat with viewers. Then, I\u2019ll sing a song and we\u2019ll finish with a chat with the viewers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a happy-go-lucky cheerful event. People can grieve if they want to. It\u2019s an opportunity to come together, breathe and try to gather strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Another uplifting internet music event is The Kennedys\u2019 weekly production \u2013 \u201cThe Kennedys\u2019 Livestreaming Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s edition \u2013 \u201cThe Kennedys Special \u2018River Of Fallen Stars\u2019 25th Anniversary Livestream — is scheduled for June 7 at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n

These shows have happened every Sunday since the pandemic shut us all in back in early March. These intimate, all-request live-streaming concerts come straight from the talented husband-and-wife duo\u2019s New York apartment to your home.<\/p>\n

Jorma Kaukonen<\/p><\/div>\n

Jorma Kaukonen\u00a0<\/i><\/strong>performs his 10th free solo \u201cQuarantine Concert from the Fur Peace Ranch\u201d on June 6 at 8 p.m. For more than two months, Kaukonen has been performing, telling true-life tales and talking about his songs, often playing them on the very guitar he wrote the song on. It is a fascinating look at this artist’s history and influences.<\/p>\n

Alto saxophonist and educator\u00a0Alexa Tarantino<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and pianist and composer\u00a0Steven Feifke<\/i><\/strong> are presenting weekly jazz livestream concerts instituted after the<\/em> lockdown at\u00a0www.crowdcast.io\/stevenandalexa<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jokingly dubbing themselves Alexa Quarantino and Steven Lock-and-Feifke, they began with an evening of vibrant originals on March 15. They continued with weeks devoted to Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Jackie McLean, Antonio Carlos Jobim, The Songs of Broadway, the Great American Songbook and Songs of Springtime.<\/p>\n

Tarantino\u2019s new Posi-Tone quartet recording\u00a0\u201cClarity\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0will be released on June 5, so the duo will devote\u00a0June 7<\/strong>\u00a0to music from the album (which features Feifke, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Rudy Royston).
