{"id":20867,"date":"2020-03-26T09:55:02","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T13:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/?p=20867"},"modified":"2020-03-26T14:32:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-26T18:32:26","slug":"area-dentists-donate-ppe-to-regions-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/?p=20867","title":{"rendered":"Area dentists donate PPE to region&#8217;s hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By Mike McGann<\/strong>, <em>Editor, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11387\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11387\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11387\" src=\"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1001-350x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers, observing social distancing, sort out medical supplies to be donated to regional hospitals.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dentists from across the region have stepped up to help area hospitals with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), turning over a cache of donated equipment planned to be used for a charity event in June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With the status of Mission of Mercy-PA up in the air \u2014 the annual event offers free dental care to disadvantaged folks over a two-day period \u2014 the organization behind it had a stock of badly needed medical supplies in anticipation of the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although the event had been planned for June in Philadelphia (it has been at various locations in the state over the last seven years), the board of the organization moved literally and figuratively this week to donate their supplies for the event to six area hospitals in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has seen shortages of various types of protective health gear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This week, members of the organization went to their storage unit and loaded up six trucks \u2014 carefully maintaining social distancing \u2013 to help six hospitals: Temple University, Lankenau, Jefferson Torresdale,\u00a0Fox Chase, Abington and Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Board of MOM-n-PA agreed to donate their entire inventory of PPE (personal protective equipment) to six southeast Pennsylvania health organizations in an effort to aid in the fight against the COVID-19 virus,\u201d said Dr. Ronald Heier, chairman of volunteers for MOM-n-Pa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">MOM-N-PA donated 53,150 masks, 312 boxes of gloves, 893 gowns, 130 hand sanitizers and 3 caviwipes, Heier said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMOM-n-PA is a non-profit organization which holds an annual free dental mission which treats up to 2000 patients over a two day period, said Heier who formerly had practices in Malvern and Devon and volunteers with Community Volunteers in Medicine. \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">MOM-n-PA since 2013 has provided dental care for the relief of pain to over 10,000 of the most needy,\u00a0many of whom are from working families who do not have access or cannot afford dental insurance.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0The 2020 event had been scheduled for June 5 and 6 at the Liacouras Center at Temple University. For updates or to make a donation, visit our dental mission website at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mom-n-pa.com\/\"><span class=\"s3\">http:\/\/www.MOM-n-PA.com<\/span><\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The status of the June event remains to be determined, but if the event is postponed \u2014 a very real possibility without the donated supplies and concerns about the ongoing lockdown in southeast Pennsylvania \u2014 organizers hope to reschedule it for the fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Additionally, local hospitals in the Chester County\/Delaware County area continue to seek donations of supplies to help battle the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Chester County Hospital has set up a drive-through donation center \u2014 hospital officials are stressing that people should not get out of their cars.
