{"id":19901,"date":"2019-11-21T08:39:40","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T13:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/?p=19901"},"modified":"2019-11-21T08:39:44","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T13:39:44","slug":"on-stage-violet-bell-bring-progressive-folk-to-delaware-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/?p=19901","title":{"rendered":"On Stage:  Violet Bell bring progressive folk to Delaware Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <\/span><em><span lang=\"EN\">Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10563\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/violet-bell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10563\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10563\" src=\"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/violet-bell-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Violet Bell<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Philadelphia area always has the Liberty Bell as a prime attraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On November 21, there will be two \u201cbells\u201d for area residents to enjoy \u2013 the Liberty Bell in Old City and Violet Bell, which is headlining a show at the Living Room (35 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, <a href=\"https:\/\/thelivingroomat35east.com\/\">https:\/\/thelivingroomat35east.com<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Violet Bell is touring in support of its self-released full-length debut, \u201cHoney in My Heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Recorded at Fidelitorium in Kernersville, NC, and co-produced Jason Richmond (Avett Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers), the album features 11 original compositions, and was cut live in single takes, without vocal tuning, isolation or click tracks.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Violet Bell, a progressive folk duo from North Carolina featuring Lizzy Ross and Omar Ruiz-Lopez, came into existence in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cA mutual friend of Omar and me got us together,\u201d said Ross, during a recent phone interview from Chapel Hill, North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt was a few weeks before I was going to do a live recording. I just wanted to get these songs on tape. Omar brought a whole new level to these songs \u2013 and he learned them in just two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe worked well together. Omar brought a whole new dimension to the music. We played shows together and became a band. We\u2019ve done 350-400 shows in four years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Prior to forming Violet Bell, Ross fronted The Lizzy Ross Band from 2009-2016. Ruiz-Lopez, a multi-instrumentalist who studied violin, viola and cello, moved to North Carolina after hearing bluegrass for the first time while in college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe both came from other projects,\u201d said Ross. \u201cI recorded under my own name. Omar had played with other bands and had composed tracks for the Durham Symphony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cOur first record together was an EP called Dream the Wheel.\u2019 It was about life as a movement through the four seasons. They were environmental recordings of the space we were in \u2013 a 22-acre patch of land near Hillsboro. That was in 2017.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The duo\u2019s next studio project was the album, \u201cHoney in My Heart,\u201d which was recorded at a studio in the Tarheel State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded the album at <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Fidelitorium,\u201d said Ross. \u201cIt\u2019s Mitch Easter\u2019s studio in Kernersville<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt was co-produce with Jason Richmond. He\u2019s a local treasure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cHoney in My Heart\u201d was cut live in single takes, without vocal tuning, isolation or click tracks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded live,\u201d said Ross. \u201cWe stood next to each other, played instruments and sang. We just let the music come out and didn\u2019t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">mess with it too much \u2013 no overdubs, no click tracks. It was all very organic. The band will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2011 and this year marks Mary Ramsey\u2019s 26th anniversary as the band\u2019s lead singer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThat\u2019s a long time \u2013 26 years,\u201d said Ramsey during a phone interview last week from her home in Buffalo, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt\u2019s crazy. If 25 years ago, you told me that I\u2019d be doing this 25 years later, I probably would have laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re excited the way things are going. We\u2019re out this weekend with the show in Ardmore and then two in Fairfield, Connecticut \u2013 Stageone on the 23rd and The Warehouse on the 24th.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done quite a few shows this year \u2013 50 or 60. And, we had the exciting addition of going to Hawaii and playing the Blue Note.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Founded in the fall of 1981 in Jamestown, New York, 10,000 Maniacs\u00a0won the hearts and ears of music fans around the world &#8212; and sold more than 10 million records. Together with artists like R.E.M. and The Replacements, they helped define \u201ccollege rock\u201d and the first wave of \u201calternative rock\u201d bands with their pop-conscious, literate and lush aesthetic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The current 10,000 Maniacs\u2019 line-up includes founding members &#8212;\u00a0Steven Gustafson (bass guitar) and Dennis Drew (keyboard, vocals) along with Mary Ramsey (lead vocals, viola), Jeff Erickson (guitar, vocals), John Lombardo (guitar, vocals) and Jerome Augustyniak (drums).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re still based in western New York \u2013 in Jamestown,\u201d said Ramsey, during a phone interview last week from her home in Buffalo, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI grew up in Fredonia, New York and then moved to Buffalo in 1985. John lives here in Buffalo too. We\u2019re all still in this part of the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy joining 10,000 Maniacs as their singer just sort of happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cJohn and I have had a folk-rock duo for 25 years called John and Mary. We opened for 10,000 Maniacs on tours in 1990 and 1993. We still do shows as John and Mary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe did the tour when Natalie (original lead singer Natalie Merchant) departed the band. The group asked John and me to write songs with them. The first CD we made with them was \u2018Love Among the Ruins\u2019 in 1997.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cReplacing Natalie was challenging. But, any kind of transition is challenging. The band wanted to keep going \u2013 and to keep its signature sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWith Natalie\u2019s vocals, I just sing them and respect them. I just try to sing from my souk and hopefully sing in tune and do a good version of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWith the band, I sing, write and play violin and viola. There are songs in there that I\u2019ve written. The support from then audience was the affirmation to keep doing what we were doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In June 2016, 10,000 Maniacs released \u201cPlaying Favorites\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/ufi7db\/ej2wwd\/m9zucg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Omnivore Recordings<\/a>. The live recording was the follow-up to the band\u2019s highly acclaimed 2015 release\u00a0\u201cTwice Told Tales,\u201d a full-length collection of traditional British Isles folk songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe are piecing together a new studio album,\u201d said Ramsey. \u201cWe\u2019ll be working on it now. I write a lot of the lyrics and melodies, but everybody contributes. We bring what we\u2019re working on to the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen we play a show, we do a variety of things \u2013 hits, songs from other albums and some new songs too. Beautiful singers, effortless instrumentalists, and seasoned touring artists, they recognized that what each can accomplish individually could be made all the stronger by this collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAbout two years ago \u2013December 2017 \u2013 we had the brainchild to go on a three-week tour together,\u201d said BettySoo, during a four-way phone interview Tuesday morning as the trio travelled from New York City to as gig in Albany, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt was Rebecca\u2019s brainchild. We had never played together before. But it was O.K. Wee decided to do one writing session at Studios at Fischer in Fischer, Texas. We wrote three songs that night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Pettis said, \u201cPat and Tracy Drennen, the owners of Lucky Hound Music, are friends of mine. They had this space (Studios at Fischer) and wasn\u2019t in use right then and they use us use the space. We didn\u2019t want to use any of the equipment. We just wanted to have a writing session there. In the morning, we played our songs for them. That same morning, they signed us to record for their label.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe three of us have been friends for 10 years in the folk circuit way but we ever had sung or written together. So, all of this has been magic.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Betty Soo said, \u201cWe\u2019re all committed to juggling our solo careers with our Nobody\u2019s Girls careers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In February 2018, they returned to the same studio to record their six-song EP, \u201cWaterline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe were at Fischer for solid week,\u201d said Loebe. \u201cThey were four very long days. They were the only days where we all had time in our schedules. Michael Ramos produced the EP&#8211; and he\u2019s producing our next record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This Fall, the trio released two Christmas songs (\u201cSomeday at Christmas\u201d, and \u201cMerry Christmas, Baby\u201d) and their cover of Tracy Chapman\u2019s \u201cFast Car\u201d. In January, the three talented musicians will complete the recording of their first full length album, \u201cNobody\u2019s Girl,\u201d which will be released on July 10, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe just co-wrote a lull-length record,\u201d said Betty Soo. \u201cWe\u2019ve been writing together, and the arrangements are more complex. When we write and sing together, it\u2019s special.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The new album features three musicians who are now very comfortable together and are making music in a very organic way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been in the studio a lot and we have more work to do there in January,\u201d said Pettis. \u201cWe have a great backing band in the studio. The record, which debuted among the top 10 on the US \/ International Folk DJ Radio Charts, is being played at mainstream radio in more than 40 markets throughout the country and in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The current incarnation of Analog Gypsies features Peter Farrell, keyboards, guitar, vocals; Jocko MacNelly, bass, mandolin; Jimmy Coleman, drums; and Stacy Weathers, banjo, vocals. Cary handles guitar and lead vocals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Many people have favorite mantras. Cary\u2019s favorite \u2013 and very own \u2013 mantra is \u201cSing Louder\u201d \u2013 and for good reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cSing Louder\u201d is one of her most popular songs. It was the title track an EP \u2013 \u201cSing Louder \u2013 the Festival EP\u201d in 2015. It is also the title of her latest album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe \u2018Sing Louder\u2019 album came out in November 2017, but I think of it as a 2018 album,\u201d said Cary. \u201cMy book \u2013 \u2018Sing Louder &#8212; Stories Behind the Songs\u2019 \u2013 is all about the songs that inspired the \u2018Sing Louder\u2019 album \u2013 10 first-person stories. I released the book on March 8 \u2013 International Women\u2019s Day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Cary<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">, who graduated from Hershey High and then majored in biomedical engineering at Duke University, explained the inspiration for the book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI share a lot of my stories on stage,\u201d said the veteran singer-songwriter. \u201cI do a lot of storytelling in my shows \u2013 but it\u2019s also a concert. My band would go crazy if I talked too much between songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAfter shows, people ask me to tell them more about the songs. I\u2019m a firm believer in sharing my stories \u2013 not only for the stories but also to help other people. People come up to me after shows all the time and say things like \u2013 I just lost my mom and didn\u2019t realize that it was still affecting me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen I was making the record, I said I was going to write a book and let people pre-buy it. That way, I wouldn\u2019t let other things get in the way. I knew I had to write the book and get it finished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThere I one story for each song on \u2018Sing Louder.\u2019 It\u2019s pretty straightforward. I think it\u2019s a good read. The book I\u2019m working on now is a companion to my first album \u2018New Shoes\u2019 from 1998. It\u2019s about how I began my music career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Cary<\/span><span lang=\"EN\"> and her band Analog Gypsies produce a sound that is a blend of folk, rock, gypsy jazz and jam band. At the core of the band are Cary and Farrell. And, I sang on \u2018Kids\u2019 Corner\u2019 on WXPN. When I was young, it was mostly soul \u2013 and I was learning jazz. I love singing soul, reggae and blues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">According to Krupa, \u201cI grew up on a horse farm in New Jersey\u2014running through the woods, swimming, singing and dancing in the kitchen to Annie Lennox and Sade, as my mom made dinner\u2014these are the images that create the memories of my childhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAnd like so many singer\/songwriters before me, my first memory of singing was in church. My grandfather was a Methodist minister and having that gospel influence at such an early age takes deep root.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAlongside going to horse shows and the shore, I was continually being exposed to music, from WXPN 88.5 concerts to a singer\/songwriter cruise when I was 10 years old, featuring Emmy Lou Harris and Brandi Carlile. Music has been THE constant in my life for as long as I can remember.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Krupa was involved in academics, music and sports when she attended high school at Notre Dame High School in Mercer County. She even played varsity tennis for the Irish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">When Krupa was 13, she recorded and released a pair of songs. One track, \u201cBlush,\u201d was described as \u201ca high energy, schoolgirl crush, tween pop anthem. The other, \u201cI Fall Hard,\u201d was billed as \u201can insightful look at taking a chance and falling love through the eyes of teen girls everywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Krupa has come a long way in the decade that followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy desire for a career in music started when I was really young,\u201d said Krupa. \u201cMy dad said \u2013 you have to finish school first. My first band was called Local Honey \u2013 a six-to-seven-piece band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Local Honey released three songs in 2017 \u2013 \u201cSkyline Sunset,\u201d \u201cAll There Is To Say,\u201d and \u201cCome On Over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI learned a lot in the band, but it was time to go solo,\u201d said Krupa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">And, through her studies at Drexel, it was time to see the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI just was in London earlier this year,\u201d said Krupa. \u201cIt started in Hong Kong two years ago with an internship for writing. I also spent time travelling to Kyoto and Tokyo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThen, I went to London in spring 2018. I met a lot of eclectic musicians there. I played at Ronnie Scott\u2019s and got to record at the BBC\u2019s Tylie Arts Studios. After London, I lived in Montpelier, France last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen I came back to this area, I opened for Magic City Hippies at The Fillmore and I went to L.A. to open for James Bay at the Hotel Caf\u00e9 in Hollywood.
