The group\u2019s popularity quickly spread around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">What set BBMak apart from the other \u201cboy band\u201d groups of the era was that the versatile threesome won over young audiences with its music &#8212; not with flashy choreography and unlimited hype.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">It didn\u2019t hurt that Mark Barry, Christian Burns and Stephen McNally were all handsome enough to be teen mag cover boys \u2013 which they were.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Still, BBMak&#8217;s main selling point was its musicianship and the soaring harmonies created by three lads, each of whom could be a lead singer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The multi-platinum selling group sold more than three million albums and had hit singles worldwide between 1999 and 2003. Best known for self-penned, guitar-driven hits &#8220;Back Here,&#8221; &#8220;Out of My Heart&#8221; and &#8220;The Ghost of You and Me,&#8221; BBMak was one of the few bands from that genre with singers who played their own instruments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">BBMak got its start in Liverpool &#8212; the home of another top-selling band with great harmonies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe were all in different bands in Liverpool,\u201d said Burns. \u201cWe were mostly playing pop and rock with some soul music thrown in. We were doing different club gigs and we met when our bands shared bills. After we met, playing together as a band was just something that evolved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">After a four-year career that saw the trio from Merseyside release a pair of albums \u2013 \u201cSooner Or Later\u201d in 2000 and \u201cInto Your Head\u201d in 2002 \u2013 BBMak called it quits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Last year, after a 16-year gap, BBMak rose like a Phoenix. The trio has been recording and touring ever since. The band\u2019s current tour brings it to the area for a show on May 9 at The Queen (500 North Market Street, Wilmington, 202-730-3331, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thequeenwilmington.com\/\">www.thequeenwilmington.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">During the decade-and-a-half hiatus, Burns and McNally remained in the music industry, while Barry\u00a0went into personal training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019ve remained friends and stayed in touch all these years,\u201d said Burns, during a recent phone interview from his home in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cLast year, we got together and jammed. We hadn\u2019t picked guitars and played together in 15 years. We then realized that we really enjoyed it \u2013 and that we missed it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe got our guitars out and played for a while. For fun, we posted it on Facebook \u2013 and it went crazy. It got two million views in a couple days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">One thing led to another and soon the band had a few gigs lined up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe did four shows last year \u2013 the Cabin Club in Liverpool, the Gramercy in New York, the House of Blues in Chicago and a show here in L.A.,\u201d said Burns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cBefore we started, we wondered if anyone was going to show up. The shows all sold really well. Everyone was singing along to the singles \u2013 and to the album cuts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re playing live with only three vocalists and three guitars, there\u2019s nowhere to hide. It\u2019s great to see that people genuinely love the music. We got messages on social media from fans who said that our music meant a lot in their lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The three friends started writing together again for the first time in 15 years and immediately found their groove.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe really missed us,\u201d said Burns. \u201cWe\u2019ve got so much music in us. We\u2019re doing it ourselves \u2013 and we\u2019re doing it our way. We just finished making a new album and it will be out in a few months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIn our live shows now, we\u2019re doing mostly the old stuff \u2013 the songs the fans really want to hear. The other show features songs that have been performed onstage for six decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9514\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Mike-McLean-as-Captain-von-Trapp-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9514\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9514\" src=\"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Mike-McLean-as-Captain-von-Trapp--350x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sound of Music<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">From May 9-12, The Playhouse on Rodney Square (10th and Market streets, Wilmington, Delaware, 302-888-0200, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duponttheatre.com\/\">www.duponttheatre.com<\/a>) is presenting a brand-new production of \u201cThe Sound of Music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The new touring production of \u201cThe Sound of Music,\u201d is directed by Matt Lenz, based on the National Tour\u2019s original direction by three-time Tony Award\u00ae winner Jack O\u2019Brien and continues the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the acclaimed film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Original choreography by Danny Mefford (\u201cDear Evan Hansen,\u201d \u201cFun Home,\u201d \u201cThe Bridges of Madison County,\u201d \u201cBloody Bloody Andrew Jackson\u201d) has been recreated by Jonathan Warren, with music supervision by Andy Einhorn (\u201cHello, Dolly!,\u201d \u201cBullets Over Broadway,\u201d \u201cRodgers + Hammerstein\u2019s Cinderella,\u201d \u201cThe Light in the Piazza\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The production features music by Richard Rogers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Linsay and Russel Crouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The touring cast features Jill-Christine Wiley playing Maria Rainer, with Mike McLean as Captain Georg von Trapp, Lauren Kidwell as The Mother Abbess, Jake Mills as Max Detweiler, Kate Turner as Elsa Schraeder, Lauren O&#8217;Brien as Liesl and Hunter Brown as Rolf Gruber. The von Trapp children are played by Ethan Douglas Cutillo (Kurt), Riley O&#8217;Kane (Marta), Jenna Seasholtz (Louisa), Emily Strugatsky (Brigitta), Quinn Eden Titcomb (Gretl) and Edward Turner (Friedrich).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">von<\/span> <span lang=\"EN\">Trapp<\/span><span lang=\"EN\"> Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony\u00ae, Grammy\u00ae and Academy Award\u00ae winning Best Score, including \u201cMy Favorite Things,\u201d \u201cDo-Re-Mi,\u201d \u201cClimb Ev\u2019ry Mountain,\u201d \u201cEdelweiss\u201d and the title song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This show, which has been a family favorite through generations, enjoyed extraordinary success as the first live television production of a musical in over 50 years when \u201cThe Sound of Music Live!\u201d aired on NBC in December 2013 and was seen by over 44 million people. 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI started with the tour in August 2017,\u201d said McLean, during a recent phone interview as the company traveled to a tour stop in Roanoke, Virginia. \u201cWe had a few months off last summer. Then, we got mostly new cast in October 2018. We\u2019ve been on the road ever since and we\u2019ll finish it up in about a month.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">McLean\u2019s resume includes National Tours of \u201cGuys and Dolls\u201d (Benny), \u201cSaturday Night Fever\u201d (Frank Jr.) and several productions Off-Broadway including \u201cZiegfeld\u2019s Midnight Frolic\u201d (Jack Pickford), and \u201c90210 The Musical\u201d (Dylan Mckay u\/s).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThis is my second time to perform at The Playhouse,\u201d said McLean. \u201cI was here a few years ago with \u2018Guys and Dolls.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen I first auditioned for this show, I didn\u2019t think I was right for the part of Captain von Trapp. I thought I was a little young to be the father of seven children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cA day after the audition, I flew to Hawaii for my mother\u2019s 60th birthday. I got a call back the next day. I asked if I could just make a video for them. They agreed and said they wanted to see me when I came back to New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt was my mom who introduced me to \u2018The Sound of Music.\u2019 A lullaby favorite for me was \u2018My Favorite Things.\u2019 It\u2019s interesting how things come around in a circle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d is a musical based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, \u201cThe Story of the Trapp Family Singers.\u201d Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The original Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened in 1959 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The first London production opened at the Palace Theatre in 1961.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">It was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards. \u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d was the last musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein; Oscar Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201c\u2018The Sound of Music\u2019 is an iconic show,\u201d said McLean. \u201cWe\u2019re based on the original Broadway show \u2013 not the movie. People learn something new when they come to this show. Just going to live theater is a magical experience. The audience is part of the energy of the show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAudiences love the show because it\u2019s a story of self-discovery. Wheeldon has been hailed as, \u201cthe best thing to happen to ballet for 50 years\u201d and \u201cDGV: Danse \u00e0 Grande Vitesse\u201d is a prime example of why he has generated so much excitement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Created in 2006 for The Royal Ballet, Wheeldon\u2019s \u201cDGV: Danse \u00e0 Grande Vitesse\u201d is set to Nyman\u2019s score, which was composed to commemorate the 1993 inauguration of the north European line of the French train \u00e1 grande vitesse, more commonly known as the TGV.<br \/>\nA tour de force for 24 dancers with four couples at its core, the work propels the dancers through shifting physical and emotional landscapes, paralleling Nyman&#8217;s division of the score into five regions. While a travel motif is never literal, a sensation of momentum and surging progression infuses the ballet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This weekend\u2019s shows feature the final performances by one of the Pennsylvania Ballet\u2019s all-timer favorite principals \u2013 Ian Hussey. The versatile veteran has been with the company since 1993.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Over the years, Hussey has danced many of his dream roles, his favorite being his debut as Romeo in John Cranko\u2019s \u201cRomeo and Juliet.\u201d At the time, Ian was still a young corps de ballet member, and Arantxa Ochoa, his childhood dance idol, was his Juliet. After the performance, then Artistic Director Roy Kaiser came out onto stage and promoted Ian to soloist in front of an appreciative audience &#8212; one that included his mother, Joan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m down to my last few weeks of rehearsals,\u201d said Hussey, during a recent phone interview. \u201cMay 9-12 will be my final Pennsylvania Ballet shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy husband has his own business and lives in Brooklyn. We\u2019ve been together five years. Now, I want to move to New York to be with him and start a family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m dancing my best right now. I was looking for a right time and knew that my move to New York would have to happen soon. I\u2019ve been with the Pennsylvania Ballet 15 years \u2013 seven as a principal. I\u2019ve gotten to dance every role I wanted to dance. It was a moment. I knew it was the right time \u2013 time to go out on top and go out on my own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m involved in all three works in this weekend\u2019s show. I danced \u2018DGV\u2019 once before \u2013 in 2015. I also saw New York Ballet do it after I had performed it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt\u2019s about a 30-minute piece with four movements and a finale. There are four principal couples and eight corps couple. It has a beautiful set \u2013 panels of floor are laid vertical in shapes that move around. I do the third piece which is a beautiful and exciting. \u2018DGV\u2019 is an epic journey and the music is really grandiose and driving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The second work on the bill is the world premiere of \u201cTrigger Touch Fade\u201d by Jorma Elo, who is known for his focus on speed, difficulty, athletic ability and physicality. Elo\u2019s ballet will feature spectacular choreography and a central, beautiful pas de deux. The piece is set to music by Joseph Haydn\u00a0(Violin Concerto In G)\u00a0and\u00a0Johann Sebastian Bach\u00a0(Violin Concerto #2 In A,\u00a0Violin Concerto #2 In A minor,\u00a0Concerto For Violin, Strings And Continuo in D Minor).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The third piece is \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Glass Pieces\u201d by Jerome Robbins. The c<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">ompany premiere <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">remains a fresh and contemporary piece more than 30 years after its debut.\u00a0It is set to music by Philip Glass \u2013 \u201cRubric\u201d and \u201cFa\u00e7ades\u201d from his 1981 work \u201cGlassworks\u201d and \u201cFuneral\u201d from his 1983 opera, \u201cAkhnaten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Video link for the Pennsylvania Ballet &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iVE9pYhWfVA\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/iVE9pYhWfVA<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Performances at the Academy of music are scheduled for May 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m., May 11 at 2 and 8 p.m. and May 12 at 2 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Ticket prices range from $35-$154.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9516\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/AliceWallaceIntoTheBluePink.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9516\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9516\" src=\"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/AliceWallaceIntoTheBluePink-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alice Wallace<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">When Point Entertainment presents a show at Dawson Street Pub (100 Dawson Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawsonstreetpub.com\/\">http:\/\/www.dawsonstreetpub.com\/<\/a>), featuring Alice Wallace, it will be a \u201cfirst\u201d \u2013 but not a \u201cfirst\u201d for the Point putting on a show at the Manayunk venue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve never played Philadelphia before,\u201d said Wallace, during a recent phone interview from her home in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was born in L.A. My mom grew up in Hollywood and then our family moved to St. Cloud, Florida. I moved back to L.A. 11 years ago. They came out before me and I followed. When I got a job to teach full-time, I moved home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Wallace\u2019s extended stay in Florida came about because she was a journalism major at the University of Florida and then a writer for the Gainesville Sun<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Wallace quickly established herself as a talented artist in the genre known as \u201cCalifornia Country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy parents are the reason I started playing music,\u201d said Wallace. \u201cWhen I was growing up, they were listening to Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. My tastes were formed by my parents\u2019 tastes \u2013 Gram, Emmylou, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin and The Who.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI didn\u2019t pick up guitar until the Lilith Fair era. Then, I went back to my parents\u2019 music \u2013 especially Linda Ronstadt. It was nice coming to California to really feel my influences \u2013 to play the Troubadour and other L.A. country rock clubs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Now, Wallace is touring in support of her new album \u201cInto the Blue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cInto the Blue\u201d is Wallace\u2019s fourth album and her debut on the new Rebelle Road label, a record company formed by three women dedicated to the California Country music community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI recorded \u2018Into the Blue\u2019 at the beginning of last year in L.A. \u2013 at Steve Berns\u2019 home studio in the Valley,\u201d said Wallace. \u201cThe album was co-produced by Steve Berns and Rebelle Road\u2019s KP Hawthorn. We also did some tracking in Malibu at Dragonfly Creek Recording Studio. We went there because the drummer and the session musicians wanted a big live room.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The studio band on \u201cInto the Blue\u201d featured drummer Jay Bellerose (Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Aimee Mann), bassist Jennifer Condos (Jackson Browne, Graham Nash), guitarist Tom Bremer, and pedal steel guitarist Jeremy Long (Sam Outlaw).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe how good my songs sounded being played by these great musicians,\u201d said Wallace. \u201cAll but one of the songs were originals<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe first single from the album was \u2018Santa Ana Winds,\u2019 a song about the forest fires here in Southern California. The track proved a Spotify smash, with 10 million worldwide streams thus far as well as featured placement on multiple TV soundtracks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cHong Kong was an exciting place,\u201d said Brown, during a phone interview last week from his home in London\u2019s Ealing district. My mom is from Singapore and my dad is from the U.K. I was around 12 when we left Hong Kong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMusic was one thing I knew I was good at. I was always singing. It was the one thing I really enjoyed. I did \u2018Sons &amp; Daughters\u2019 single in 2013 and it got 10 syncs \u2013 placements o TV shows \u2013 in a year. That was a turning point for my career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Recorded in January 2019 with longtime collaborator Ian Barter (Amy Winehouse, Paloma Faith), \u201cDarling, It\u2019ll Be Alright\u201d marks an immense evolution in Brown\u2019s artistry. Fueled by Barter\u2019s insightful production, its bold sonic approach provided the ideal backdrop to Brown\u2019s distinctive lyrical vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was writing for \u2018Darling, It\u2019ll Be Alright\u2019 all last year,\u201d said Brown. \u201cI made it at Ian\u2019s studio in Reading. It\u2019s a studio with a lot of cool stuff. We did the whole thing in about a month. I don\u2019t like to take a long time to record. I\u2019d rather work fast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIts all analog. Ever single instrument is live except the drums. It was a conscious decision on my part. I wanted a soundscape with vocals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Strong music passages, emotive vocals and insightful lyrics proved to be a winning combination for the promising young musician.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">According to Brown, \u201cMy heart is on my sleeve, really, in my songwriting. My strength is not in esoteric melancholy. This is a really positive record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe world is in a state these days but there are still incredible things happening. A lot of people are speaking out and coming together. There\u2019s this counterforce to the endless tide of negativity we see every day. I wanted to feed into that, offer my own counterweight.
