{"id":14676,"date":"2018-03-12T09:34:24","date_gmt":"2018-03-12T13:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/?p=14676"},"modified":"2018-03-12T09:34:26","modified_gmt":"2018-03-12T13:34:26","slug":"first-chester-county-land-deed-on-display-at-historical-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/?p=14676","title":{"rendered":"First Chester County land deed on display at Historical Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6676\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Deed-2-030918.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6676\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6676\" src=\"http:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Deed-2-030918-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chester County Recorder of Deeds Rick Loughery and Chester County Commissioner Terence Farrell joined Delaware County Recorder of Deeds Tom Judge and the Delaware County Historical Society to visit the property site of Chester County&#8217;s first deed located in present-day Delaware County.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first real estate deed recorded in the original Chester County, Pennsylvania, took place 330 years ago on March 10, 1688.\u00a0 The deed is for a Quaker meetinghouse now located in Chester, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs one of the first three counties in Pennsylvania, Chester County originally spanned a much wider area encompassing what is now Chester County and Delaware County,\u201d said Rick Loughery, Chester County Recorder of Deeds.\u00a0 \u201cEven though this first recorded deed is now within the boundaries of Delaware County, it is appropriate that it records the transaction of a Quaker meetinghouse, given Chester County\u2019s William Penn\u2013Quaker origins.\u201d <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The grantor listed on the deed was Urin Keen and the grantees were trustees of the Society of Friends. As part of the 330<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary recognition, the deed is on display through the end of March at the Chester County Historical Society, 225 North High Street, West Chester.<\/p>\n<p>According to Chester County\u2019s Department of Archives and Records Services, the earliest deed transaction for land in the current Chester County boundary was recorded on July 2, 1688 for a grant from William Penn to James Dicks, for 250 acres of land in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>Chester County\u2019s historic deeds are part of the Chester County Archives, created in 1982 to preserve and make available Chester County historic records.
