{"id":10752,"date":"2017-03-11T09:59:01","date_gmt":"2017-03-11T14:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/?p=10752"},"modified":"2017-03-11T09:59:04","modified_gmt":"2017-03-11T14:59:04","slug":"spring-ahead-but-change-batteries-be-wary-on-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/?p=10752","title":{"rendered":"Spring ahead, but change batteries, be wary on the road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/SpringAhead.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3466\" src=\"http:\/\/downingtowntimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/SpringAhead-257x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>It\u2019s that time again \u2014 we lose an hour of sleep, but gain a precious hour of sunlight in the evening, meaning more time outside and the coming prospect of firing up those grills (Tuesday\u2019s snowstorm forecast notwithstanding) \u2014 Daylight Savings Time starts early Sunday, so don\u2019t forget to change your clocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But, as usual, there\u2019s a few more things to remember: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">State Fire Commissioner Tim Solobay is reminding you to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when changing your clocks this weekend.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYou should get into the habit of changing your clocks and batteries, and practicing your home fire escape plan with your family all in the same weekend,\u201d Solobay said. \u201cThese simple things are among the best steps you can take to keep your loved ones safe if there\u2019s a fire in your home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Solobay said working<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half, and worn or missing batteries are the most common cause of a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector malfunction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And if that wasn\u2019t enough, local firefighters are making the same argument:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSaving your life can be as simple as changing your smoke alarm batteries once a year and replacing smoke alarms every seven to 10 years,\u201d says Jim Lentz, a 16 year veteran fire fighter with IAFF Local 3790.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Special smoke alarms are even available for those who are deaf or hearing-impaired.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The NFPA reports that working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Research has also demonstrated that photoelectric smoke alarms are more effective at warning people of smoke from smoldering fires than ionization smoke alarms. With earlier warning, people have more time to escape a burning structure and to call 9-1-1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your local fire fighters recommend installing a dual purpose smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside of every bedroom and on each floor of your home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYou should also install carbon monoxide alarms in your home and check them once a month,\u201d says Mike Pawlowski, Coatesville IAFF President. Carbon monoxide (CO) &#8211; an invisible poisonous gas that has no odor can be lethal and <\/span><span class=\"s3\">CO alarms<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0should be\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">installed<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">More than 2,300 people die each year in home fires. Having a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm that works 24 hours a day greatly increases your chance of survival if your home catches on fire. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the case of an emergency, please call 9-1-1 for the help of your local fire fighters, they note.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One last thing: it will again be dark in the early morning hours, which means the potential for automotive concerns, namely seeing students and other pedestrians on roadways during the morning commute and drivers might find themselves sleep deprived:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMost people will see a dramatic difference during their morning commute on Monday, as roadways remain darker longer, causing concern for pedestrians,\u201d said Jana L. Tidwell, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic.\u00a0 \u201cMotorists and pedestrians, including school students waiting at bus stops, need to be aware of these dangers, remain alert, and minimize distractions to reduce the risk of motor vehicle crashes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Losing an hour of sleep can also increase a motorist\u2019s risk of drowsy driving.\u00a0 In a recent AAA Foundation <a href=\"http:\/\/aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d8.96%3c6-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=4253139&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=125177&amp;Action=Follow+Link\"><span class=\"s5\">Traffic Safety Culture Index report<\/span><\/a>, nearly one in\u00a0three drivers (32 percent) confessed they were so tired they drove drowsy during the previous 30 days.
